The War at Home
The War at Home touches upon concepts surrounding nostalgia, melancholia, and our sensitivity to the world around us, looking to my grandfather's journal from WWII is a key source of its inspiration. At 22, my grandfather was shot down over Germany and taken prisoner by the Nazi Army, and while in the camps he kept a journal full of cartoons, illustrations, poetry, and writings to help lift the spirits of him and those around him.
The War at Home aims to have the same impact, to act as a light in a world that seems to be getting darker and darker. Evident nods to military fashion, as well as fashion of the period, are prevalent throughout the 8 look collection. Focusing on textiles like wools, linens, and other common fabrics of the period helps to not only maintain a level of historical accuracy, but also allows the viewer to truly transport themselves to the world created for the collection to live in. Other key pieces, trinkets, buttons, ribbons, and other trimmings, were found at surrounding vintage shops and acted as the necessary pieces that pulled the collection together.
